Leaders That Navigate Disruption With Confidence
Leaders Choose the Right Location & the Right Way
This week RSM, the largest accounting firm outside of the Big Four in the U.S., based on revenue, with a focus on providing middle-market businesses with audit, tax and consulting services, announced its U.S. unit plans to invest $1 billion in artificial intelligence over the next three years, well above its previous investments, in part to use AI agents to automate more tax and accounting workflows. Leaders, pay attention.
I attended a business conference last week in which one of our keynote speakers, Janine Garner, bestselling author (It’s Who You Know), CEO & Business Owner, and business mentor, spoke about what she calls the “decade of disruption” and what we are looking for when it comes to leadership. She highlighted that our job as leaders will be to inspire the people around us to do the work that needs to be done, all while they are in search of trust and navigating disruption in all aspects of their lives. Janine highlighted recent Gallup research that provides some insights into what followers are seeking from leaders.
In a rapidly changing world of technological advancement and geopolitical uncertainty, Gallup set out to learn what people around the world need from their leaders — simply by asking them.
What Do People Need Most From Leaders?
New Gallup research spotlights four needs of followers worldwide.
Across 52 countries and territories — accounting for 76% of the world’s adult population and 86% of global gross domestic product — Gallup asked two questions:
- What leader has the most positive influence on your daily life?
- Now, please list three words that best describe what this person contributes to your life.
The three words that people use to describe the most positive leaders in their lives fall into four themes:
- Hope stands out as the dominant need, accounting for 56% of all attributes tied to positive leaders, far outnumbering mentions of the next key need.
- Trust (33%)
- Compassion (7%)
- Stability (4%) combined accounts for about one in nine positive leadership traits mentioned.
